Our Story
The narrative unfolds with the meeting of Di McQueen and Scott Richardson. Their love story began in 2017, and it led to the establishment of HoneyBee Hives in 2018, driven by the local demand for bees. In May 2020, they sealed their commitment to each other in matrimony. Since its inception, HoneyBee Hives, located in northern NSW, has successfully supplied over 1000 nucleus hives to satisfied customers.
However, in 2019, the devastating bushfires in NSW ravaged thousands of hectares of bee-foraging areas. This catastrophe forced a pivotal shift in their business strategy, as they could no longer breed bees for sale. In response, they embarked on a new venture, crafting high-quality balms from beeswax. What initially began as a cost-effective solution for Christmas gifts to share with family and friends soon evolved into a diverse collection of all-natural, therapeutic, and cosmetic balms.
In addition to their extensive product line, Di and Scott go the extra mile by actively sharing their knowledge and passion with the community through a series of educational presentations and workshops for schools and community groups. These engagements not only enrich the understanding of the importance of bees but also foster a sense of environmental stewardship among those they reach.
Moreover, their entrepreneurial journey has taken an international turn, as they’ve embraced the exhilarating challenge of exporting their exceptional products to Vietnam. This venture represents a remarkable expansion of their business horizons, bridging cultural divides through the universal appreciation of their award-winning honey and all-natural balms.
Their dedication and innovation have garnered them professional recognition, most notably with their recent victory in the 2023 Business NSW Awards for Excellence in Agriculture & Primary Industries. This esteemed accolade serves as a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence and their profound impact on their industry.

Scott Richardson
Scott’s journey into the enchanting world of beekeeping began as a young child, captivated by the wisdom imparted by his grandfather. Over the years, this initial fascination blossomed into an enduring passion for bees and their vital role in our ecosystem.
Throughout his life, Scott occasionally ventured into other career paths, but he invariably found himself drawn back to his one true calling – beekeeping. With an illustrious career spanning over 40 years as a commercial beekeeper, Scott has honed his expertise and accumulated a wealth of experience.
One of his greatest joys lies in sharing this wealth of knowledge and experience with budding beekeepers who are embarking on their own beekeeping journeys. Scott’s dedication to supporting and mentoring the next generation of beekeepers underscores his profound commitment to the preservation and promotion of this essential craft.
Di McQueen-Richardson
Drawing from her extensive background in natural therapies and a diverse range of business management roles, Di seamlessly integrates her skills and expertise into her position as the Queen Bee at HoneyBee Hives. With a profound commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, she ardently advocates for raising awareness about the critical role bees play in our ecosystem.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Di proudly serves as a dedicated board member of The Mend & Make Do Crew, a noteworthy not-for-profit organisation focused on providing support to homeless and at-risk community members in Northern NSW and South East Queensland. Her involvement with this noble cause underscores her unwavering dedication to making a positive impact on her local community and beyond.
